Two Savannah residents who strive to improve their communities and serve those in need were presented with Good Neighbor Awards today by City Council.

The winners, announced during the regular City Council meeting today, were Thelma Grant and Howard Dawson, Sr. The two were recognized publicly and presented with Good Neighbor Award plaques by Mayor Eddie DeLoach and City Council.

About the Good Neighbor Award recipients:

Thelma Grant

• Volunteers at the Cloverdale Neighborhood Center

• Buys and cooks meals for residents at the Cloverdale Center

• Provides decorations for Cloverdale Center

• Serves as Financial Secretary for the Cloverdale Neighborhood Association

• Provides clothes and decorations for Cloverdale seniors

• Arranges for discounts on activities planned for Cloverdale Center

Howard Dawson, Sr.

• Organized and acted as President of Staley Heights Neighborhood Association

• Former Vice President of Liberty City/Summerside/Southover/Richfield Neighborhood Association

• Volunteered for Live Oak Public Library System

• Acted as mentor for young boys at St. Paul’s Academy

• Provided transportation to neighbors to attend community meetings

• Former member of the Homeless Board

• Works with “Men of Liberty City” cleaning up and picking up debris in neighborhood

• Helps raise scholarship funds for students

The Good Neighbor Award is a way to recognize citizens who improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods every day through acts large and small.

Good Neighbor Award recipients must be:

• A resident of the City of Savannah

• Have made contributions to their neighborhoods or to Savannah

• Have demonstrated concern for their neighborhood’s well-being or overall quality of life for the City of Savannah

• Not be employed by the City of Savannah
