Following a long career of service to his accounting firm and his clients and providing leadership to the firm, Partner J. Harry Haslam, Jr. CPA announced his retirement from the Hancock Askew effective Thursday, June 1, 2017.

Haslam, who started with Hancock Askew in 1973, rose to Partner in 1981 and was promoted to Managing Partner in 1986, a position he held until he mentored another partner to take over that role as part of his succession plan in 2011. Harry worked with Hancock Askew for his entire career of 44 years. Throughout his career, Harry also served on the Executive Committee and as Marketing Partner for Hancock Askew.

“Harry not only has years of outstanding service to the Savannah community, but has provided strategic leadership as the firm expanded into additional cities and service offerings and has continued to provide valuable counsel to the Partners and our staff,” said Michael T. McCarthy, Managing Partner, Hancock Askew. “I want to publicly thank Harry for his service and dedication to serving our clients and helping grow our firm’s value. Thank you for continuously living out our firm’s mission, vision and values by putting others first. Your dedication to being passionately engaged in what is best for our clients, our employees and our communities at large is truly appreciated.” “When Harry started with Hancock Askew, it was a small firm with less than 15 people in a single office in Savannah and when he retired in 2017 the firm was over 100 people with three offices in Savannah, Atlanta and Miami.”

In addition to Haslam’s service to Hancock Askew, he has chaired the Board of Trustees at Memorial Health University and been a Member of the Board of Trustees for Memorial Captive Insurance Company and Mercer Medical School of Savannah. He is a past president of the Hibernian Society of Savannah and was a Member of the Alliance Partners Advisory Council Board of BDO Alliance, USA. In 2010 Harry was honored with the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants Public Service Award. The annual Public Service Award recognizes a member who has distinguished himself or herself in public service activities at the local, state, regional, or national level.

Harry currently serves as Chair of the Board of St. Benedict Education Foundation for support of San’t Anselmo University Rome Italy.

“Those of us who know Harry personally admire him not only for his business efforts, but also for his personal lifetime values as a mentor and a devoted husband, father and grandfather” McCarthy said. “I wish Harry well and am confident the community and firm will continue to benefit from his valued leadership.”
