The Savannah-based Dewitt Tilton Group has announced that company president and co-founder Chris Tilton has attained the South Carolina Unlimited Building Contractor’s license.
Although Tilton was previously licensed by National Association of State Contractors Licensing Agencies to work in Georgia and South Carolina, the unlimited license allows his company to take on a greater scope of commercial projects in the Palmetto State, as well as other types of building construction. It also allows Tilton access to take a business law exam in 26 different states for licensing.
“This certification means a great deal to me because my love for construction was born in South Carolina,” Tilton said. “The Lowcountry is an important place in my past, and it is a big part of my future.”
“When I was a child, we lived on Dove Street in the North Forest Beach area of Hilton Head Island, which was still a small, rural place,” Tilton said. “My dad was a South Carolina Lowcountry homebuilder and one of only three builders on the island back in the 1960s. From a very young age, I was often at the side of my father’s trim carpenter, learning the business as a hands-on helper.”
When Tilton moved to Savannah, he and his future business partner, Andrew Dewitt, became high school friends. They would later found the company that bears their names after seeing the need for a Savannah firm that would focus on new commercial construction and could manage every aspect of a project from pre-construction through completion.
Tilton is a licensed general contractor in Georgia and South Carolina and is a Georgia registered real estate appraiser. Andrew Dewitt carries certifications as a real estate appraiser in Georgia and South Carolina and is a member of the Savannah Board of Realtors. Together, they have more than 50 years of experience in the local construction industry.
