Dr. Joe Buck, III formally announced his candidacy for Savannah-Chatham County Public School System Board President today on the steps of the school system’s administrative offices at 208 Bull Street. Buck served as the two-term president for the SCCPSS from 2007 to 2014.
Amongst a group of community leaders, Buck explained, “The AdvanceED report shows clearly the current Board is not functioning according to Georgia law.” he continued, “ I am running to restore the culture of unity, trust and accountability for the Board.”
Buck outlined his initiatives, as follows:
Solve the board interference and governing issues addressed in the AdvanceED report
Provide needed assistance to get remaining schools off the State Focus list
Ensure schools have needed features installed to enhance safety
Represent the District in supporting the Summer 500 Program and the Early Learning Academies Initiative
“The Board exists, by Georgia Statute, to hire the Superintendent, approve appropriate policies, and provide the necessary financial resources so that programs can be implemented,” Buck said.
“Unity and trust will enable the Board to clearly address the issues of school safety, ESPLOST accountability, improved academic achievement and prudent expenditure of funds,” Buck stated. “Although the ultimate authority of those issues rest with the Superintendent, an effective supportive Board will enable the Superintendent to work toward improving the education and lives of all of our students.”.
The election for school board president will be held in Chatham County on May 22, 2018.
