Friday, March 23rd, 2018

Georgia Department of Natural Resources-Wildlife Resources Division will receive $1,211,823 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to offset costs for road repair in the Ossabaw Island Wildlife Management Area from Hurricane Matthew. The October 2016 storm damaged infrastructure including roads, embankments and culverts.

The $1.2 million grant represents a federal share of the total project cost of $1,615,765. The remainder will come from non-federal sources.

This grant is funded through FEMA’s Public Assistance Grant program which provides grants to state, tribal, territorial, and local governments, and certain types of private non-profit organizations so that communities can quickly recover from major disasters or emergencies.

FEMA obligated funding for this project directly to the Georgia Emergency Management/Homeland Security Agency which is responsible for ensuring that the eligible sub-recipient receives this award. Following a state's review process and upon receipt of appropriate documentation, they will provide funds to Georgia DNR-WRD on a reimbursable basis.

In Georgia, 20 counties were designated for Public Assistance funding under the Presidential declaration due to damage caused by Hurricane Matthew. To date FEMA has obligated more than $90 million to Georgia under the Public Assistance program.
