“Now Showing” at SCI Neighborhood Centers

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Monday, April 23rd, 2018

The film and lecture series is open to adults 60 years of age or older and is being funded by a grant from the Thanks Mom & Dad Fund® received by SCI earlier this year. The series is provided at no cost to the participants although donations are appreciated. The screenings, followed by a lecture and group discussion, will include  “Singin’ in the Rain”, “Oklahoma”, and “South Pacific” as part of the Broadway Musicals on the Big Screen at the Port Wentworth Center.  The Classic American Tales on Film series will include “The Great Gatsby”, “Grapes of Wrath”, and “To Kill a Mockingbird”.

According to Roger Smith, Director of The Learning Center at SCI, “we have long recognized the importance of cinema in American culture and life.  Fridays have been devoted to cinema studies at The Learning Center for almost a decade, and in 2018 TLC is pleased to bring the magic of the movies to SCI’s neighborhood centers. Films will be screened on Fridays beginning at 12:30 p.m., followed by a concise presentation on the history of the film, its actors and awards, its motifs and its messages.”  “Of course,” continued Rogers, “there’s also plenty of time for group discussion, a feature of the film class that TLC members enjoy enormously.”

“The objective for the expansion of the Neighborhood Center activities,” according to SCI President, Patti Lyons, “ is to further engage both the mind and body, which are critical to successful aging.”
Thanks Mom & Dad Fund® President, Maureen Kelly, said the focus of the Fund® is to fill service gaps for seniors, helping to improve the lives of older adults and caregivers.”  SCI received one of the 56 grants, made in partnership with the Georgia Department of Human Services, to promote program innovation and improvement at local senior centers
