Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Tuesday, April 17th, 2018

Who is running for office? What issues do they support? Oppose? What experience and education do they bring to the position? Voters who know the answers to those questions can make informed decisions about whom to vote for based on issues rather than partisan politics.

To assist local voters with these decisions, the League of Women Voters of Coastal Georgia has launched its online 2018 Voter’s Guide, the most comprehensive guide to candidates in the 2018 elections.

“A Voters' Guide is one of the core services of the League of Women Voters,” said Cuffy Sullivan, President of the LWVGA.  “Our comprehensive guide of candidates and issues is provided in a completely nonpartisan fashion, with the aim of helping voters make informed decisions when they vote.”

The Guide is online at lwvcga.org and includes information on 77 candidates in 23 races including every executive office in state government. It includes information on individuals running for the following positions:

Federal:

U.S. Representative

State:

Governor

Lieutenant Governor

Attorney General

Secretary of State

Commissioners of Agriculture, Insurance & Fire Safety, Labor

State Superintendent of School

Legislative seats in coastal Georgia districts

Local:

Savannah-Chatham County School Board President

The entire Savannah-Chatham County School Board

Five judges

Eight Chatham County Board of Elections seats

Unless incumbent candidates are running unopposed, every listing provides a complete profile of the candidate with a statement about why they are running, a list of their experience and a list of the issues that make up their platform.

After the primary on May 22, the losing candidates will be removed and additional context and information will be added throughout the year up until the general election in November.

“We want to provide voters with as much relevant information as possible a month before the primary,” said Rebecca Rolfes, the LWVGA Director of Communications. “As candidates go through their campaigns in the coming months, we will add to the information so that voters can make decisions based on facts not political spin. The League’s number one goal for 2018 is to increase voter participation at the polls. The Voters Guide is a crucial part of making that happen.”

Voting Resources

The League has a number of resources on its web site in addition to the guide. A link to the State of Georgia’s webpage called MVP (My Voter Page) lists an individuals’ voter registration status, their poll location, early voting locations, sample ballots and much more. It also lists key upcoming election dates and tells what district individuals can vote in.

People who want to register to vote and have a driver’s license, can do so right on this site.  For those who aren’t registered, it provides information on how to register.

“Anyone with questions about voting, their registration or even a ride to the polls can contact us at [email protected],” Sullivan said. “If you don’t vote, you don’t count.”
