Savannah State University’s School of Teacher Education is now the College of Education. The reorganization was approved by the University System of Georgia in June. The change is in recognition of the expanded offerings from the college.

“The College of Education more accurately captures the expanded mission to offer degree programs in many areas of education and lays the foundation for future graduate degrees,” says Michael Laney, Ph.D., provost and vice president of Academic Affairs.

COE was also endorsed by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission to offer bachelor’s degree in middle grades education (grades 4-8), with concentrations in language arts, mathematics, science or social studies.

“Thanks to the hard work of everyone at SSU, and our local and regional school district partners, the addition of the middle grades program will bring a full complement of educator preparation programs to our campus, which is critical to meet the need for teachers in Georgia’s K-12 schools,” says Mary Kropiewnicki, Ed.D., dean of COE.

COE also partners with SSU’s College of Sciences and Technology for a bachelor’s degree in science with teacher certification. All of the programs focus on the workforce demand for teachers with STEM experience.

The existing interdisciplinary studies bachelor’s degree program will also be housed within the new College of Education.
