Ball Maritime Group was awarded the Georgia Chapter American Public Works Association award in the category of Disaster or Emergency Construction/Repair for delivering a new ferry terminal design to Cumberland Island after Hurricane Irma. The destruction caused by the storm was significant with a devastating economic impact to the island and the city of St. Mary’s.

“It was an honor to help St. Mary’s in their time of need and it’s humbling to be awarded for the project,” said Jason Ball, President of Ball Maritime Group. “This project was unique in that we were reacting quickly to a natural disaster which brought specific challenges. The terminal layout had to meet the requirements of the US National Park Service, which included challenging constraints with marine works, handicap access, and difficult tidal conditions, as well as requirements for accommodating multiple types of passenger ferry vessels. We brought in engineering support during construction so that the ferry service was returned to operation within 60 days of its destruction. It was our pleasure to work with the people of St. Mary’s and to help this close-knit community get back on its feet.”

Ball Maritime Group is led by Jason P. Ball, who has more than 20 years of experience as a Professional Engineer in the maritime community, as well as nine years as a combat engineer officer in the Georgia Army National Guard. The Georgia Chapter APWA’s Awards Program was established to recognize outstanding public works employees, individuals, groups and projects, representing the best achievements in the public works profession in Georgia.
