City Upgrades Safety Beacons Ahead of First Day of School

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

The City of Savannah has upgraded 59 flashing beacons that warn drivers to slow down and remain alert as they pass through a school zone. The new beacons are located at public and private schools throughout the City.

Traffic Engineer Steve Henry says the upgraded beacons are more reliable and responsive because of smart beacon technology which allows them to be directly connected to the internet and the City’s traffic engineering data base.

The internet connection allows the smart beacons to automatically adjust to schedule changes caused by inclement weather, daylight saving time, holidays and other disruptions, effectively making them automated.

“Our number one strategic priority is public safety, said Henry. This is a great example of how we can use technology to improve the safety of our roadways and schools.”

The Smart Beacons also have sensors that alert traffic engineers in the event of lamp failure which ensures a smart beacons will be operational during safety zone hours. The two way communication between the smart beacons and the City’s database allows traffic engineers to be proactive in addressing issues that may arise. Previously, any issues had to be seen and then reported to traffic engineering.
