Staff Report From Savannah CEO
Friday, August 10th, 2018
Savannah’s beloved Gypsy Jazz and Latin Swing band, Velvet Caravan, will headline a very special evening of music on Friday, September 14th at 7:30pm at The Lucas Theatre in Savannah. The band has exploded beyond its Savannah roots with performances over the last year two years at South By Southwest Music Festival, Rochester International Jazz Festival, The Iridium Club in New York, Word Cafe in Philadelphia, NPR’s Latino USA as well as appearance with the Savannah, Hilton Head and Jackson, TN Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras. Locally they have appeared at the Savannah Jazz Festival, Revival Fest, Savannah Stopover Music Festival well as the grand finale event for the 2018 Savannah Music Festival.
Renowned Jazz vocalist Annie Sellick will join the band, adding a vocal element to Velvet Caravan’s normally instrumental performances. Sellick calls Nashville home but is a mainstay at Jazz Festivals all over the world, including the Montreal Jazz Festival. She has performed in Europe, Japan, Canada and across the United States and has released four albums.
Atlanta’s balkan band Mercury Orkestar will open the night. Mercury Orkestar fuses Pop rhythm, Balkan melody, and Jazz improvisation in lively performances that are a shot of pure excitement. Their spitfire trumpets, wailing clarinets and booming tubas will get any party started.
