The Savannah Senior Strikers are slated to host their Fifth Annual Devereaux Dixon Sr. and John C. Jackson Memorial Golf Tournament with golfers from around the United States on Sept. 21-23 in Pooler, GA. Proceeds will benefit Greenbriar Children’s Center.

The weekend starts Friday at 7 p.m. with a meet-and-greet at the Cottonwood Suites, 301 Governor Treutlen Drive in Pooler, featuring a delicious Lowcountry boil dinner. The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, September 23 at the Crosswinds Golf Club, 232 James B. Blackburn Drive in Savannah, and runs through Sunday. All registered competitors and guests will take a relaxation break Saturday night to enjoy a dinner and dance, also at the Cottonwood Suites. On Sunday morning, golfers begin the final round with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The tournament entry fee is $150, which includes cart rental, lunch and dinners. Non-golfers are also welcome to participate in the festivities for a fee of $20. Mailed entry forms and payments are due by September 15; entries received after this date will be $165.

The Savannah Senior Strikers organization was formed in 2006 as a charitable organization made up of a group of local men who loved to play golf and wanted to give back to the community. They selected Greenbriar Children’s Center as a focus for their fundraising initiatives and began the annual golf tournament in 2014 to honor Senior Strikers who had passed away. The first year, the tournament raised $500 for Greenbriar and in 2016 they raised $2,000. Donations have continued to increase as the Senior Strikers also support the organization throughout each year with additional projects, such as providing Christmas gifts for Greenbriar’s young residents.

“We look forward to this tournament and all of the weekend social events every year,” Greenbriar Executive Director Gena Taylor said. “The Senior Strikers are wonderful to commit so much time and energy to helping the children of Greenbriar, and our organization is incredibly grateful for them.”

Greenbriar is a nonprofit organization that provides services that include an emergency shelter, runaway/homeless support, residential care, independent living, and family preservation, as well as early childhood education and care which leads to the healthy development of children and young adults and to the strengthening of families.
