The Susan W. Thompson Literacy Fund, held and administered by The Savannah Community Foundation, supports qualified charitable organizations in Chatham County, Georgia that conduct or sponsor literacy programs for the elderly or disadvantaged.  The Fund was established by J. Wiley Ellis, Esq. as Executor of the Last Will and Testament of Susan W. Thompson, a retired Reader’s Digest editor.

The grant committee for the Fund, which is comprised of the current and past two presidents of the Community Foundation’s Emerging Leaders Committee, recently awarded a total of $18,700 from the Fund to the following recipients:   Kicklighter Resource Center, Rape Crisis Center, Savannah Association for the Blind, Senior Citizens, and Wesley Community Centers. These funds will be used for classroom books, literacy transitional camp for blind children, literature appreciation and literacy summer camps.

The Community Foundation normally issues requests for proposals to Chatham County nonprofits engaged in literacy programs in January of each year.  For additional information about the Susan W. Thompson Literacy Fund, please go to savfoundation.org or email to [email protected].
