Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Warns of Phone Scam

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Monday, June 17th, 2019

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office has recently identified an elaborate phone scam utilizing an automated system and individuals who are identifying themselves as deputies with the Sheriff’s Office.

“These individuals executing this scam are informing residents that they have warrants and need to pay in order to avoid to be arrested,” explained Chatham County Sheriff John T. Wilcher. “I cannot emphasize enough that we would never discuss a warrant over the phone nor take payment over the phone.”

As a general rule, the Sheriff’s Office does not discuss or take care of valid warrants over the telephone and if we have an active warrant, it will be served in-person by a uniformed deputy.

If you receive a phone call of this manner, do not follow the instructions given. Hang up and immediately call the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office at 912.652.7634.

“If you are concerned, take the time to follow-up on the phone call and call the Sheriff’s Office,” explained Wilcher. “Be diligent and aware that there are individuals that will represent themselves under false pretense for personal gain.”
