Project Recovery launch in mid-September 2019 is an immersive week of theatre, dialogue, and education designed to destigmatize the views of addiction and people in recovery, while spotlighting the community services available to persons involved in the recovery process.

In partnership with Willingway Hospital, the Averitt Center for the Arts  along with playwright David Dannenfelser and theatre directors Katie Pearl and Ashley Teague are in the final stages of developing  Because You Asked a dramatic adaptation of true-life stories of addiction and recovery. This production will inform audiences of the risks and effects of substance abuse, as well as provide insight to its human tragedy. Prior to and during the run of the production, Project Recovery team members will establish dialogue with local police, first responders, and the medical community.

Meetings will also be coordinated with community prosecutors and judges to create a 3600 perspective of addiction and individuals in recovery. Forming an understanding of all those who are tangled in the addiction crisis will permit a more comprehensive understanding of this epidemic.

The project brings resources and education to the community through  receptions, workshops, community walks, resource fairs, and more.  Participants will come to understand the vital assistance these partnering organizations deliver and how they may best utilize their offerings.  These free events will bring people together, no matter where they are in the addiction spectrum, to stand witness that they are not alone in their journey.

Project Recovery has two principle goals: help people in addiction find the type of services they may need and to destigmatize the views of addiction and people in recovery.

Note: real life inspirations, along with project staff, artist and local officials are available for interviews at any point.

Playwright David Dannenfelser and Director Ashley Teague are available for in-person interviews starting August 5th.

Events, Exhibits, Speakers: Because You Asked will premiere in Statesboro, Georgia, September 13-22, 2019, which has been deemed Heroin and Opioid Awareness Week by the U.S. Department of Justice.
