Georgia Hall of Fame Writer Janisse Ray to Visit Flannery Home December 8th

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Wednesday, December 4th, 2019

The Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home will welcome Georgia Hall of Fame writer Janisse Ray on Sunday, December 8, 2019, 4 p.m., 207 E. Charlton St. This event is free and open to the public.

Ray is a writer, activist, and naturalist who has authored five books of literary nonfiction and a collection of eco-poetry. She is best known for Ecology of a Cracker Childhood, a memoir that seeks to make peace with an unsettled upbringing.

Ray grew up in a junkyard along U.S. Highway 1, hidden from Florida-bound travelers by hulks of old cars. In language at once colloquial, elegiac, and informative, Ray redeems her home and her people, while also cataloging the source of her childhood hope.

She holds an MFA from the University of Montana and two honorary doctorates. She was the Rubin Writer-in-Residence at Hollins University during spring 2018. Her translated work has been published in France and Turkey. Her latest book is The Seed Underground.

Copies of Ray’s books will be available for purchase at the event.
