Georgia Southern's Masquers Bring Razor-sharp Drama ‘Clybourne Park’ to Armstrong Campus March 5th-7

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

The student theater group, the Masquers, present their main stage show of the year, “Clybourne Park,” at Jenkins Hall Theatre on the Armstrong Campus of Georgia Southern University. The Pulitzer Prize-winning play will run March 5 through 7 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 8, at 3 p.m.

The drama, centered around the politics of race, begins in 1959. It tells the story of a couple moving out to the suburbs after the tragic death of their son. Inadvertently, they sold the house they were leaving to the neighborhood’s first black family. Fifty years later a young white couple buys the home in what is now a predominantly black neighborhood, signaling a new wave of gentrification. In both instances, a community showdown takes place, pitting race against real estate with this home as the battleground.

“As a play it was written to make people uncomfortable, perhaps even angry about these very issues that still impact people’s lives every day,” said director and professor Elizabeth Desnoyers-Colas, Ph.D. “I want people to think about how people fight to keep their respective communities intact, sometimes to the detriment of trying to keep others out that don’t look or sound like them.”

General admission tickets to the show cost $15. Discounts are offered to seniors, children and military members. Georgia Southern students, faculty and staff are admitted free with their Eagle ID. Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Box Office or by calling 912-344-2801 or by visiting georgiasouthern.edu/armstrongtickets. The Armstrong Campus Fine Arts Box Office is located in the Fine Arts Hall and is open weekdays from noon to 3 p.m.
