Staff Report From Savannah CEO
Monday, April 27th, 2020
Savannah Ballet Theatre (SBT) is offering free virtual dance and fitness classes every week day from April 27th to May 1st to support the community during and in the aftermath of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic. Virtual classes range from children’s classes, to strength and relaxation classes for all and ballet tuition for experienced dancers via the organization’s Instagram (@savballet).
To support families who are home schooling their children, SBT is introducing a new Children’s Connections initiative on Friday morning from 11-11:35 a.m. This specially tailored class will feature an introduction to basic ballet, fun movement, and a book reading and is suitable for children of any age. Adults and young people that are looking for ways of reducing stress and staying active during these challenging times can access two early evening classes: Strength and Conditioning on Tuesday from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. and Stretch and Relaxation on Friday at 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. On Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., SBT offers free virtual ballet classes for any dancer who would like to participate - whatever their level of experience.
Professional dancer, Kristen Jameson, Educational Coordinator at SBT and Adjunct Professor of Dance at Savannah State University, is conducting these classes. She holds two Bachelors of Fine Arts and a Master’s degree and has been dancing with SBT for two years.
“We are committed to educational outreach in our community and have been offering free ballet classes for dancers since the pandemic began and our dance school closed to enforce social distancing. We have now decided to introduce the more accessible virtual classes as a great way to engage with children and support families stuck at-home in a fun, but enlightening way,” said Jameson. “Since it is also our mission to develop the talent of Savannah dancers, we want to continue reaching them and inspiring them in any way we can. SBT is Savannah’s own professional dance company and we always strive to make the arts accessible to the entire community. It is so important for us to offer these classes completely free of charge to support anybody who is looking for a way to connect with others, exercise and relax during this stressful time.”
