Staff Report From Savannah CEO
Thursday, May 7th, 2020
Savannah State University (SSU) will hold a virtual commencement celebration for undergraduate and graduate students earning degrees at the end of the spring 2020 semester. The pre-recorded, closed caption celebration will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, via the university’s website – savannahstate.edu – as well as the university’s YouTube and Facebook social media platforms.
“Commencement is a momentous occasion for our students and their families and deserves to be celebrated until we can safely convene in person to do so,” said Kimberly Ballard-Washington, interim president of SSU. “While we share their disappointment of having to postpone the traditional commencement ceremonies, we are nonetheless very proud of our graduates and we celebrate their accomplishments.”
All May 2020 commencement ceremonies and related events were postponed due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Information on an in-person celebration this fall for the May 2020 class will be announced at a later date.
During the virtual conferring of degrees, each graduate’s name will be called and a slide featuring a photo along with degree information will be displayed. Approximately 480 undergraduate and graduate students applied for May graduation.
To personalize the virtual celebration, graduates are encouraged to share their special Savannah State moments via social media using #savstate20.
