Georgia Southern University is teaming up with Shimadzu Scientific Instruments to host a forensic science symposium Sept. 10. "From Concept to Courtroom: Advancing Forensics Through the Academic-Government-Industry Nexus" is a free, daylong event open to anyone interested in the science of solving crime. 

Georgia Southern faculty will share how their expertise can make the difference in tough investigations. GBI forensic experts will walk through techniques used in their fields. Shimadzu leaders will discuss the latest technology enabling new analysis. This event offers something for everyone, whether looking to explore educational options, find out more about a potential future career or make connections to crack the cases you are already working.

The symposium is organized by Ed Mondor, Ph.D., associate professor of biology in the College of Science and Mathematics, and is intended to highlight how academia can provide critical support to investigators. Mondor is the only forensic entomologist in Georgia and frequently assists in high-profile law enforcement investigations. 

“We have many experts at Georgia Southern with specialized knowledge,” said Mondor. “That knowledge can often assist an investigation in ways you might not think about. Frequently it’s the key to understanding the case.”

The symposium will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Georgia Southern’s Continuing and Professional Education Center in Statesboro. A catered lunch will be provided. Seating is limited to the first 100 people to RSVP. Those interested in attending are asked to register here by Aug. 29.
