Senior Citizens Inc. Launches Innovative Pilot Program Delivering Diabetic-Friendly Meals to Older Adults in Chatham County

For many older adults living with diabetes, proper nutrition is not just important — it’s life-changing. That’s why Senior Citizens Inc. (SCI) has launched a new pilot program that delivers diabetic-friendly Meals on Wheels to vulnerable seniors across Chatham County.
Made possible by a generous grant from the Jack Golden Fund of The Savannah Community Foundation, the initiative aims to improve health outcomes for older adults managing diabetes — one carefully prepared meal at a time.
“This pilot is about more than food — it’s about dignity, independence, and giving older adults the tools to better manage their health,” said Patti Lyons, President of Senior Citizens Inc. “Thanks to the support of the Jack Golden Fund, we’re delivering meals that are both nutritious and specifically designed for people with diabetes.”
Building on the trusted foundation of SCI’s Meals on Wheels program — which already provides hot, nutritious meals that meet one-third of an older adult’s daily dietary needs — the pilot program goes a step further. A select group of Meals on Wheels clients will receive specially formulated meals tailored to support blood sugar control and manage diabetes-related dietary needs.
Participants will also receive educational resources to better understand how nutrition plays a key role in managing their condition. SCI is working closely with clients to collect feedback on meal quality, satisfaction, and overall impact — helping the organization assess the effectiveness of the pilot and explore possibilities for future expansion.
This innovative approach is rooted in SCI’s mission to help people age successfully by supporting both physical health and overall well-being.
