After the passage of House Bill 756, the Chatham Area Transit Board of Directors was revamped, reshaping the board’s composition, adding two new board seats, and changing the distribution of local agencies given appointments.

Notably, under the new law, the Chatham County Board of Commissioners' allotment of appointments changed from six of nine to three of eleven. Despite the bill’s passage and subsequent signing by the Governor, the County has filed lawsuits and made allegations, including claims of route and funding redirection that impact the paratransit system provided by CAT. The County's claims are false.

Additionally, under the new law, the County is required to appoint a member within the disability community to the Chatham Area Transit Board. The County has yet to appointanyone to the board.

“Our local transit system is close to being underfunded to a crippling halt. It’s time we come together and find a solution we can all agree on,” said Spencer DeMink, Spokesperson for the Chatham Area Transit Board.

The Chatham Area Transit Board of Directors remains committed to serving Chatham County and its residents, who rely on a functioning transit system to get to where they need to go.
