Savannah State University students were honored this month at the 4th Annual STEAM Symposium at Universal Orlando Resort, where Xfinity and Google recognized their achievements with a year of Xfinity Mobile service, a free Google Pixel Pro XL, and a new laptop.

The students joined more than 250 first-generation, college-bound participants from across the country for the four-day immersive experience, designed to spark curiosity and career ambition in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.

The symposium was hosted by Comcast, Xfinity, Universal Pictures, Universal Destinations & Experiences, and the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE), a nonprofit organization that promotes college access. Together, these partners create an experience that empowers students through hands-on learning, behind-the-scenes access, and direct engagement with STEAM professionals.

“The STEAM Symposium is Xfinity’s premier experience designed to inspire and connect first-generation, college-bound students, from low-income households, with the careers and technologies of the future,” said Kohposh Kuda, SVP and GM, Xfinity Mobile.

Students from Savannah State joined peers from across the nation Nov. 6–9, hearing from Comcast NBCUniversal engineers, creators, journalists, and executives. These industry experts provided insight into the blend of creativity and technical expertise behind Universal’s most iconic franchises, offering students a rare look at real-world STEAM careers.

“The Council for Opportunity in Education is dedicated to inspiring the next generation of leaders,” said Kimberly Jones, President of COE. “We’re proud to partner with Comcast NBCUniversal to bring the STEAM Symposium to life and reach students who might not otherwise have access to these kinds of transformative experiences. We hope this opportunity ignites a passion for STEAM and encourages them to explore careers they may not have considered before."

Savannah State students shared impactful reflections on their experience:

Denise Jackson, aspiring nurse: “The Xfinity event was inspiring and motivated us to use our voices and confidently take our place at the table. It highlighted the importance of making thoughtful decisions about our future rather than rushing and encouraged us to move forward with intention and self-assurance.”

Kareem Crawford, aspiring physical therapist: “Seeing everyone’s passion and dedication at the event inspired me to keep growing and challenging myself.”

Kanece Ellison, aspiring pediatrician or nurse: “This event taught me to stay curious but prepared for what the future brings to you.”
