On Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. – noon, Savannah State University students, faculty, staff and alumni will plant 75+ trees on the historic campus. Volunteers will meet on the Unity plot in Alexis Circle before heading to various planting locations.

The tree placements have been mapped out, based on needs for canopy, erosion and groundwater filtration. Sue Ebanks, Ph.D., assistant professor of marine sciences and environmental sciences, says, “Aesthetically, Savannah State is known for its beautiful trees and maintaining the canopy is important for the stability of land and habitat.” She adds, “A portion of the ongoing component of this project will be maintenance of the plantings and continued education.”

Savannah Tree Foundation, who has trained volunteers to lead this planting and others, is a not-for-profit urban and community forestry organization dedicated to preserving, protecting and planting canopy trees in Savannah and Chatham County, Georgia.

The event is a collaboration between the Savannah Tree Foundation, SSU Environmental Science Club and SSU Physical Plant, and is partially funded by the CSX Corporation Restoration grant program.
