Sustainativity Announces the Second Annual Mattress Dash

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Tuesday, October 13th, 2015

On Sunday, October 18, the second annual Mattress Dash will be held at the south end of Forsyth Park. Costumed teams of five will race mattresses in a 150-meter dash for awards, prizes, and to benefit a great cause. The Mattress Dash is the creation of Sustainativity, a Savannah-based 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to philanthropic investments in sustainability.

Teams build a racing frame capable of holding a single mattress and one rider, while being pushed by the other four team members. Prizes and awards will be given out in these categories: Fastest Team, Greenest Racing Frame, Judge's Choice and People's Choice.

The races will start at 1 p.m. After the race, participants are encouraged to celebrate and showcase their creative designs to the public and spectators. With costumes and themed rides, this is one of the most anticipated new events in Savannah. Proceeds will be donated to Senior Citizens, Inc., a local agency whose mission is to help people age successfully. SCI will use the funds to retrofit some of their Meals on Wheels delivery vehicles to hybrid engines and to replace old lighting in their building with new high-efficiency lighting.

“I want to show that sustainability can be fun and add to the goals of Sustainativity by inspiring people to use their creativity for improving our environment,” said Tommy Linstroth, chair of Sustainativity.

Teams can sign up and check out all information on building the race frame, rules and regulations at www.mattressdah.org, as well as see videos of last year’s event.
